Female Species – Tale of My Lost Love
Numbered Copy No. 73
Tale of My Lost Love is a fascinating archival release by Female Species, an American all-female group whose recordings remained largely unknown for decades.
The music draws on the sounds of the 1960s and 1970s, moving through garage rock, psychedelic pop, folk, country and harmony-rich pop songwriting. Rather than sounding like a modern recreation of the period, these are recordings rooted in the era itself, giving the collection an authenticity and character that is difficult to manufacture retrospectively.
Female Species are particularly interesting because their story sits outside the familiar history of rock and pop. They represent the many musicians whose work never received widespread recognition when it was originally created, only to be rediscovered years later by collectors, archivists and specialist labels.
That rediscovery makes Tale of My Lost Love more than simply an album. It is also a piece of musical archaeology — a chance to hear a largely overlooked female group whose recordings capture several strands of American popular music as they evolved across an important period.
