Originally assembled as a promotional CD-R in 1999, The Soft Bulletin Companion offers a fascinating glimpse into one of the most creative periods in The Flaming Lips’ career.
 
More than simply a collection of leftovers, it documents the band’s transition from the sprawling experimentation of Zaireeka to the richly layered, psychedelic pop of their celebrated 1999 album The Soft Bulletin.
 
Across 13 tracks, the collection brings together previously unreleased recordings from the era, outtakes, early mixes, B-sides, international bonus tracks and stereo versions of material originally connected to Zaireeka. Familiar songs appear from new angles, while the non-album recordings reveal just how much remarkable material surrounded the making of The Soft Bulletin.
 
This 2021 Record Store Day edition presents the complete collection across two silver-coloured LPs.
 
It is an especially interesting release for listeners who already know The Soft Bulletin and would like to explore the experiments, alternative ideas and overlooked recordings that helped shape the album’s distinctive sound.
