Fairport Convention – Gottle O’Geer
Gottle O’Geer captures Fairport Convention during one of the more unusual transitional periods in the history of one of Britain’s most important folk-rock bands.
Released in 1976 on Island Records, the album arrived several years after Fairport Convention had helped define British folk rock through their distinctive combination of traditional English music, contemporary songwriting and rock instrumentation. By the mid-1970s the personnel had changed considerably, but the adventurous spirit remained.
The record grew from sessions involving Dave Swarbrick and other musicians associated with Fairport, and the resulting album has a character of its own within the band’s catalogue. Traditional folk influences remain important, but they are mixed with a looser and at times more eclectic mid-1970s approach, making Gottle O’Geer an interesting document of Fairport Convention continuing to evolve rather than simply repeating the sound of their earlier classics.
For collectors, albums from this period offer another side of the Fairport story. While landmark releases such as Liege & Lief established the group’s reputation, Gottle O’Geer reflects the constantly changing line-ups and musical experimentation that have always been part of the band’s history.
This Island Records copy is particularly attractive because the vinyl is graded Near Mint, showing very little evidence of previous handling. The sleeve is graded VG+, with only light signs of careful previous use — a very well-preserved example overall.
