Be Yourself Tonight marks a major turning point in Eurythmics’ career, moving beyond the electronic sound of their earlier records towards a richer combination of pop, rock, soul and R&B.
Released on RCA, the album places Annie Lennox’s powerful and distinctive voice at the centre, supported by Dave Stewart’s increasingly ambitious production. The result is one of the duo’s most confident and accessible albums, combining polished 1980s production with a noticeably warmer, more organic sound.
The album includes several Eurythmics classics, most notably “Would I Lie to You?,” “There Must Be an Angel (Playing with My Heart)” and “Sisters Are Doin’ It for Themselves.” The latter features Aretha Franklin, while Stevie Wonder contributes harmonica to “There Must Be an Angel” — two collaborations that underline the album’s strong soul influence.
