Fiona Apple’s When The Pawn — available from the Mr. Hansen Records collection in the highly regarded Vinyl Me, Please Exclusive Edition from 2020.
Originally released in 1999 as Fiona Apple’s second album, When The Pawn marked a remarkable artistic step forward from her celebrated debut Tidal.
More restless, intricate and uncompromising, the record pairs Apple’s unmistakable voice and piano with the imaginative production of Jon Brion, resulting in an album that feels both intimate and musically adventurous.
The album includes some of the defining songs of Fiona Apple’s early career, including “Fast As You Can,” “Paper Bag,” “Limp,” “On The Bound” and the beautifully restrained closing track “I Know.”
This particular edition is especially desirable for collectors. Released by Vinyl Me, Please in July 2020, it represented the first official vinyl release of the album, more than twenty years after its original release.
It was pressed on exclusive heavyweight 180g black vinyl and presented in a foil-stamped heavyweight tip-on jacket with lyric sleeve. The edition also features alternate artwork selected by Fiona Apple herself.
The vinyl mastering was handled by Ian Sefchick at Capitol Mastering, while the original album was produced by Jon Brion and features an impressive group of musicians including Matt Chamberlain, Patrick Warren, Mike Elizondo and Jim Keltner.
For collectors of Fiona Apple, this is more than simply another reissue: it is the edition that finally brought one of her landmark albums officially to vinyl, presented with the kind of attention to detail that made Vinyl Me, Please releases so appealing.
