Hail to the Thief finds Radiohead bringing together many of the different musical directions they had explored across their earlier albums, combining alternative rock, electronics, atmospheric experimentation and some of the band’s most direct guitar-driven material.
The album moves between the urgency of “2 + 2 = 5,” the hypnotic electronics of “Backdrifts,” the haunting “Sail to the Moon” and the powerful “There There.” Tracks such as “A Wolf at the Door” and “A Punchup at a Wedding”further demonstrate the record’s restless and unpredictable character.
Stanley Donwood’s distinctive artwork is an important part of the release, with its dense landscape of brightly coloured words and phrases creating one of Radiohead’s most immediately recognisable album designs. Presented across the full-size vinyl sleeve, the artwork makes Hail to the Thief an especially striking physical edition.
