God’s Favorite Customer finds Father John Misty at his most intimate and emotionally exposed. Released in 2018, the album followed the sprawling Pure Comedy with something considerably more concise and personal, turning the focus inward toward relationships, isolation, uncertainty and self-reflection.
Much of the record is built around piano, guitar and relatively restrained arrangements, allowing Josh Tillman’s songwriting and distinctive voice to remain at the centre. His characteristic wit and irony are still present, but they sit alongside a vulnerability that gives God’s Favorite Customer a particularly immediate and human quality.
The album includes “Mr. Tillman,” “Just Dumb Enough to Try,” “Please Don’t Die,” “Disappointing Diamonds Are the Rarest of Them All” and the title track. Together they capture the unusual balance that makes Father John Misty such a distinctive songwriter: beautiful melodies and sophisticated arrangements combined with lyrics that can move between dark humour, self-criticism and genuine tenderness.
There are also some notable names hidden within the credits. Mark Ronson plays bass on “Disappointing Diamonds Are the Rarest of Them All,” while Natalie Mering of Weyes Blood contributes vocals to the title track. Jonathan Wilson and Jonathan Rado are among the other musicians involved across the album.

This UK & European Bella Union edition is pressed on striking Purple Metallic vinyl, making it an especially attractive alternative to the standard edition.
The vinyl credentials are strong too. The lacquers were cut by respected mastering engineer Chris Bellman, and the record was pressed by Optimal Media in Germany — two names that will be immediately familiar to many serious vinyl collectors.
Rather than being interesting simply because of its colour, this is a well-specified physical edition of one of Father John Misty’s most personal records and an appealing pressing for both listeners and collectors.
