D-A-D – Speed Of Darkness
More than four decades into their career, D-A-D remain one of Denmark’s most distinctive and enduring rock bands. Released in 2024, Speed Of Darkness is their thirteenth studio album and finds the quartet sounding confident, powerful and unmistakably themselves.
The album was created as D-A-D celebrated their 40th anniversary. From approximately forty newly written songs, the band selected fourteen for what they considered their strongest collection in many years. The result balances muscular hard rock, infectious arena-sized choruses and the darker, more reflective songwriting that has increasingly become part of the band’s identity.
“God Prays To Man” opens the album with a heavy, swaggering riff and Jesper Binzer’s instantly recognisable voice, while “1st, 2nd & 3rd” delivers the kind of direct and melodic rock song D-A-D have always handled with effortless confidence. “The Ghost” reveals the album’s more atmospheric side, and the title track combines a slow-burning groove with lyrics reflecting on an increasingly uncertain world.
Across its four sides, Speed Of Darkness moves naturally between forceful rockers such as “Live By Fire,” “Crazy Wings” and “Keep That Motherfucker Down” and more introspective material including “Head Over Heels,” “In My Hands” and the closing “I’m Still Here.” Tracks such as “Strange Terrain” and “Everything Is Gone Now” also carry traces of the raw, slightly off-centre character that has followed D-A-D since their earliest days.
Jesper Binzer, Jacob Binzer, Stig Pedersen and Laust Sonne play with the instinctive chemistry of a band that has spent decades developing its own musical language. The guitars are weighty without overwhelming the melodies, Stig Pedersen’s bass provides the familiar visual and musical eccentricity, and Laust Sonne’s drumming gives the record both precision and momentum.
Produced together with longtime Danish producer Nick Foss and mastered by Jacob Hansen, known for his work with Volbeat, Amaranthe and Powerwolf, the album combines power with clarity and detail. It is a mature D-A-D record, but never a restrained one: melodic, hard-hitting and filled with the dark humour and personality that have made the band a cornerstone of Scandinavian rock.
This European black-vinyl edition is presented across two LPs in a gatefold sleeve and includes the original lyric sheet. An excellent modern D-A-D release and a worthy addition to any collection of Danish rock.
