Four Tops – Main Street People
Originally released in 1973, Main Street People represents a particularly strong chapter in the Four Tops’ post-Motown career. Produced by Steve Barri, Dennis Lambert and Brian Potter, the album combines the group’s unmistakable vocal harmonies with a polished blend of soul, funk and melodic Los Angeles R&B.
Levi Stubbs’ commanding lead vocals remain at the centre of the music, supported by the beautifully balanced harmonies of Abdul “Duke” Fakir, Lawrence Payton and Renaldo “Obie” Benson. Highlights include the uplifting “Sweet Understanding Love,” the cinematic soul of “Are You Man Enough,” the warm harmonies of “Am I My Brother’s Keeper” and the ambitious title track that opens and closes the album.
This 1986 UK reissue on Charly R&B offers an accessible way to discover one of the group’s most rewarding 1970s albums. The record is graded Near Mint and shows very little evidence of previous handling. The sleeve is graded Very Good Plus, with only light signs of age or use.
