Frankie Goes To Hollywood’s Welcome To The Pleasuredome
is far more than a collection of 1980s hits.
Released in 1984, the Liverpool band’s spectacular debut is a bold, theatrical double album in which synth-pop, rock, funk, orchestral arrangements and studio experimentation are brought together on an almost cinematic scale.
Produced by Trevor Horn at the height of his creative powers, the album surrounds Holly Johnson’s commanding vocals with enormous drums, densely layered keyboards, dramatic strings and meticulously constructed electronic textures.
The result is one of the defining production achievements of the decade: extravagant, provocative and unmistakably ZTT.
The album contains the era-defining singles “Relax,” “Two Tribes” and “The Power Of Love,” alongside the extended title track, which unfolds over more than twelve minutes as an ambitious journey through rhythm, atmosphere and controlled studio excess. The record also ventures into surprising territory with reinterpretations of Bruce Springsteen’s “Born To Run,” Edwin Starr’s “War,” “The Ballad Of San José” and Gerry Marsden’s “Ferry Cross The Mersey.”
Trevor Horn assembled an exceptional group of musicians and studio specialists for the sessions. Steve Howe of Yes contributes acoustic guitar to the title track, while Anne Dudley, J.J. Jeczalik, Luis Jardim and Stephen Lipson add to the album’s richly detailed and highly polished sound. Every side has its own identity, giving the record the character of a complete, carefully staged performance rather than a conventional pop album.
This is the original 1984 UK double-vinyl edition on ZTT, pressed by EMI and presented in the elaborate gatefold sleeve with printed inner sleeves. The striking artwork, unusual typography and playful sleeve notes are an essential part of the album’s identity and reflect ZTT’s distinctive combination of music, design and pop mythology.
A landmark British pop record and an essential addition to any serious collection of 1980s music.
