Freddie King – My Feeling for the Blues
Originally released by Cotillion in 1970, My Feeling for the Blues captures Freddie King at the meeting point between hard-edged electric blues, deep soul and late-1960s R&B. King Curtis produced the album, while Donny Hathaway supplied the horn arrangements for most of the programme. Their setting gives King's powerful voice and economical, sharply phrased guitar playing unusual breadth without diluting the directness of the blues.
The opening pairing of “Yonder Wall” and King's instrumental standard “The Stumble” immediately establishes the record's range: relaxed, heavy-grooving vocals followed by clean, stinging guitar lines. Across eleven tracks, King revisits material associated with B.B. King, T-Bone Walker, Jimmy Reed, Ray Charles and Guitar Slim, including “I Wonder Why”, “Stormy Monday”, “You Don't Have to Go”, “What'd I Say” and “The Things I Used to Do”. The closing title track brings the record back to its emotional centre. The sessions also feature an exceptional supporting cast, including Jerry Jemmott and Cornell Dupree.
This is the November 2021 Vinyl Me, Please Classics edition: a US club reissue remastered in mono and pressed on 180g black vinyl. The dedicated mono presentation suits the concentrated arrangements and keeps King's vocal and guitar firmly at the centre. It is an exact, collectible edition rather than a generic modern reissue.
