Galt MacDermot – The Nucleus is a richly atmospheric meeting of soul-jazz, funk and cinematic composition from the Canadian-born composer best known for creating the music for Hair. Originally released in 1971, the album draws together instrumental soundtrack material and develops it through compact themes, extended grooves and vividly arranged changes of mood.
MacDermot leads the session on piano and organ, joined by an exceptional rhythm section: Bernard Purdie on drums, Gordon Edwards on electric bass, Ted Dunbar on electric guitar and Billy Nichols on wah-wah guitar. Tracks such as Fishing, Bedroom, Love Scene and the three-part Golden Apples sequence move naturally between deep funk, dramatic soundtrack writing and exploratory jazz. Purdie’s instantly recognisable pocket and MacDermot’s melodic keyboard work give the record both weight and elegance.
This 2021 Vinyl Me, Please Exclusive Pressing was the album’s first vinyl reissue. The all-analogue lacquers were cut from the original master tapes by Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound and plated at Quality Record Pressings. It was pressed by GZ Media on exclusive 180g Atomic Splatter vinyl and limited to 1,000 foil-stamped, individually numbered copies. This copy is the especially low number 00061/1000.
The vinyl is graded Near Mint (NM), showing very little evidence of previous handling. The sleeve is graded Very Good Plus (VG+) because of a small corner bump at the upper-left corner; otherwise, it presents very well.
