Gary Bartz – Another Earth
Recorded in New York in June 1968 and originally released by Milestone in 1969, Another Earth is one of alto saxophonist Gary Bartz’s most adventurous early statements. The album sits at the point where hard bop opens into modal, spiritual and avant-garde jazz, balancing powerful ensemble improvisation with Bartz’s fascination with space and astronomy.
Side A is devoted to the 23-minute title suite. Bartz is joined by tenor saxophonist Pharoah Sanders, trumpeter Charles Tolliver, pianist Stanley Cowell, bassist Reggie Workman and drummer Freddie Waits. The extended format allows the group to move between tense ensemble passages, open improvisation and driving post-bop momentum. Side B narrows the focus through the atmospheric “Dark Nebula”, the brisk “U.F.O.”, Kurt Weill and Maxwell Anderson’s “Lost in the Stars”, and the Bartz composition “Perihelion and Aphelion”.
This February 2024 Vinyl Me, Please Classics edition was issued by Milestone under catalogue number CR00700 as VMP Classics C081. It is an all-analogue production, with lacquers cut directly from the master tapes by Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound. The 180-gram black vinyl was pressed by GZ Media and is presented in a gatefold sleeve with an obi and an exclusive listening-notes booklet by Jeff Weiss.
The vinyl and sleeve are both graded Mint (M).
