Jaco Pastorius is the landmark 1976 solo debut by the revolutionary bassist who transformed the role and sound of the electric bass. Blending jazz fusion, funk, soul and orchestral composition, the album established Pastorius as one of the most original and influential musicians of his generation.
Pastorius’ remarkable fretless bass playing is at the centre of the album, but the record is far more than a display of technique. His arrangements combine lyrical melody, deep rhythmic imagination and an extraordinary command of tone. The intimate solo piece Portrait of Tracy remains one of the defining electric-bass performances, while Come On, Come Over brings together Pastorius, Herbie Hancock and soul singers Sam & Dave in a powerful jazz-funk setting.
The album features an exceptional cast of musicians, including Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, David Sanborn, Lenny White, Michael Brecker, Randy Brecker and Don Alias. From the energetic opening interpretation of Charlie Parker’s Donna Lee to the atmospheric Continuum, the explosive Opus Pocus and the orchestral closing piece Forgotten Love, the album reveals Pastorius as a composer, arranger and bandleader of exceptional scope.
Originally released by Epic in 1976, Jaco Pastorius became a defining work of jazz fusion and forever changed expectations of what the electric bass could accomplish. This European Music On Vinyl reissue is pressed on heavyweight 180-gram black vinyl.
