The J. Geils Band – Freeze-Frame
Released in 1981, Freeze-Frame marked the commercial peak of The J. Geils Band and brought their energetic blend of blues rock, rock and roll and bar-band rhythm into the polished pop-rock sound of the early 1980s. It became the group’s only US number-one album and was the final studio album to feature original lead singer Peter Wolf.
The album is driven by two of the band’s best-known recordings: Seth Justman’s “Centerfold” and the title track “Freeze-Frame”. Elsewhere, “Flamethrower”, “River Blindness” and “Angel in Blue” show the album’s broader range, moving between hard-edged rock, keyboards, horns and soul-influenced backing vocals. Luther Vandross, Cissy Houston, Fonzi Thornton, Tawatha Agee and Kenny Williams contribute backing vocals on these three tracks.
Keyboardist Seth Justman produced and arranged the album and wrote or co-wrote every original composition. Peter Wolf provides the lead vocals, J. Geils the guitars, Magic Dick harmonica and saxophone, Daniel Klein bass and Stephen Bladd drums and vocals. The horn arrangements feature players including Randy Brecker, Lou Marini and Ronnie Cuber.
This is the 1981 European stereo pressing on EMI America, carrying catalogue numbers 1A 064-400064 and SOO-17062. The sleeve was printed in Holland, while the labels state “Made in EEC”. The original presentation includes a printed inner sleeve with lyrics, credits and a band photograph.
The vinyl is graded Very Good Plus (VG+). The sleeve is also graded Very Good Plus (VG+) and has a couple of stickers on the back cover.
