Wayne Shorter’s Odyssey Of Iska is one of the saxophonist’s most atmospheric and adventurous Blue Note recordings. Recorded in August 1970 and originally released in 1971, the album arrived at a fascinating turning point in Shorter’s career, as he moved beyond his work with Miles Davis and toward the exploratory music that would soon characterize Weather Report. 
The music moves between post-bop, avant-garde jazz and more spacious, almost impressionistic territory. Shorter switches between tenor and soprano saxophone, surrounded by an exceptional ensemble including Ron Carter, Cecil McBee, Billy Hart, Alphonse Mouzon, Gene Bertoncini and David Friedman. 
Pieces such as “Wind,” “Storm,” “Calm” and “Joy” give the album an unusually cinematic flow, while the extended “De Pois Do Amor, O Vazio (After Love, Emptiness)” introduces a Brazilian influence into the record’s otherwise searching, abstract atmosphere. 
The Tone Poet edition
This is the highly regarded 2024 Blue Note Tone Poet Series reissue. It was produced under the supervision of Joe Harley, mastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio, and pressed on 180g vinyl at RTI. The supplied release data confirms catalogue number 602438963607 / BST-84363 and a worldwide release date of July 5, 2024. 
Blue Note also confirms that the Tone Poet edition was cut directly from the original analog master tapes. 
For collectors and audiophile jazz listeners, this is therefore considerably more interesting than a standard modern repress: a premium presentation of one of Shorter’s more exploratory Blue Note albums.
