Str8 Killa captures Freddie Gibbs at the point where his fiercely independent mixtape momentum became a fully realised commercial release. Originally issued in 2010, the eight-track EP distils the Gary, Indiana rapper’s appeal: a deep, controlled delivery, tightly packed internal rhymes and unsentimental street narratives delivered with remarkable technical precision.
The record balances hard-edged solo performances with a carefully chosen cast of guests. Jay Rock appears on “Rep 2 Tha Fullest”, Bun B joins “Rock Bottom”, and the closing “Oil Money” brings together Bun B, Chuck Inglish, Chip Tha Ripper and Dan Auerbach. Production from contributors including Block Beataz and DJ Burn One gives the EP a muscular Southern and Midwestern character without obscuring Gibbs’ voice.
