Gang Starr – No More Mr. Nice Guy captures the beginning of one of hip-hop’s defining partnerships. Originally released in 1989, Gang Starr’s debut brings Guru’s measured, unmistakable delivery together with DJ Premier’s early sample-based production, jazz-inflected loops and sharply constructed drum programming.
The original album includes foundational cuts such as Jazz Music, Manifest, DJ Premier in Deep Concentration, Positivity and the title track. DJ Premier and Guru produced most of the record, while DJ Mark the 45 King produced Gusto and Knowledge. Although the duo would refine their sound further on later albums, this debut documents the ideas, chemistry and musical vocabulary from which the classic Gang Starr style developed.
This expanded Vinyl Me, Please Rap & Hip Hop edition presents the album across two red-and-white vinyl records. In addition to the original programme, it collects nine bonus tracks, including remixes, instrumentals, dub versions and previously unreleased material. The lacquer was cut by Barry Grint at Alchemy Mastering at AIR, and the records were pressed by GZ Media. A 10-page, 10-inch square Listening Notes booklet by Dean Van Nguyen is included.
The vinyl is graded Mint (M). The sleeve is graded Very Good Plus (VG+) due to a small bump in the upper-left corner.
