Gábor Szabó – Dreams is a hypnotic meeting of jazz guitar, Hungarian and Spanish classical colour, modal improvisation and late-1960s psychedelic atmosphere. Recorded in Los Angeles and New York in August 1968, the album places Szabó’s distinctive guitar lines inside Gary McFarland’s spacious orchestral arrangements.
Szabó and guitarist Jim Stewart are joined by bassist Louis Kabok, drummer Jim Keltner and percussionist Hal Gordon, with cello and French horns adding an unusually cinematic depth. The programme moves from Szabó originals to adaptations of Manuel de Falla’s Song of Injured Love and Fire Dance, alongside Donovan’s Ferris Wheel. The result is one of Szabó’s most atmospheric and sought-after recordings: lyrical, mysterious and rhythmically alive.
This is the November 2022 repress of the Vinyl Me, Please Classics edition, issued by Modern Harmonic as MH-8041 / VMP Classics C041. The all-analogue lacquer was cut from the original master tapes by Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound Nashville, plated at Quality Record Pressings and pressed on 180g black vinyl by GZ Media. It comes in a heavyweight gatefold tip-on sleeve with obi strip and a 20-page Listening Notes booklet by Andrew Winistorfer.
The vinyl is graded Near Mint (NM), showing very little evidence of previous handling. The sleeve is graded Mint (M).
