George Clinton – Some Of My Best Jokes Are Friends
Released in 1985, Some Of My Best Jokes Are Friends is George Clinton’s third solo album and a vivid meeting point between classic P-Funk, electronic production and the emerging electro and hip-hop aesthetics of the mid-1980s. Clinton’s surreal humour and elastic sense of rhythm remain central, while synthesizers, drum machines and contemporary studio technology give the record a distinctly futuristic edge.
The album draws on an exceptional extended P-Funk family. Bootsy Collins, Eddie Hazel, Michael Hampton, Garry Shider, Maceo Parker, Dennis Chambers and Junie Morrison appear alongside Doug Wimbish and Thomas Dolby. Dolby contributes Fairlight and keyboard textures and takes a prominent role on “Thrashin’” and the title track, helping create one of the more unusual stylistic crossovers in George Clinton’s catalogue.
Highlights include the hard-driving “Double Oh-Oh”, the electronic funk of “Bullet Proof”, the sprawling “Pleasures Of Exhaustion (Do It Till I Drop)” and the playful title track. Across seven extended cuts, the album blends live musicianship with programmed rhythms without losing the communal, unpredictable spirit associated with Parliament-Funkadelic.
This is the original European 1985 vinyl edition released by Capitol Records, with catalogue number 1C 064-24 0360 1. It was manufactured and distributed by EMI and made in the EEC.
The vinyl is graded Near Mint, with very little evidence of previous handling or play. The sleeve is also graded Near Mint and remains in excellent collector condition.
