Curtis Mayfield’s 1970 self-titled debut marked the moment he stepped away from The Impressions and established himself fully as a solo artist, songwriter and producer. Originally released on his own Curtom label, the album combines socially conscious writing with richly orchestrated Chicago soul, psychedelic guitar, deep funk rhythms and gospel-rooted harmonies. It remains one of the defining statements of early-1970s progressive soul.
The album opens with the extraordinary seven-minute “(Don’t Worry) If There’s a Hell Below, We’re All Going to Go”, a tense, cinematic warning driven by bass, percussion, strings and Mayfield’s urgent falsetto. “The Other Side of Town” offers a moving portrait of poverty and exclusion, while the elegant “The Makings of You” reveals the warmth and romantic sensitivity at the heart of his songwriting. On “We the People Who Are Darker Than Blue”, Mayfield confronts inequality with characteristic intelligence and restraint.
Side two begins with “Move On Up”, his enduring anthem of resilience, propelled by jubilant brass, hand percussion and an irresistible upward momentum. “Miss Black America”, “Wild and Free” and “Give It Up” complete an eight-song programme that balances political conviction, personal reflection and beautifully crafted soul. Every track was written and produced by Mayfield, giving the album a remarkably unified voice and vision.
This European 2013 Curtom/Rhino reissue presents the original album on 180-gram black vinyl in a gatefold sleeve. An essential record for listeners drawn to classic soul, funk and socially conscious songwriting, and an ideal entry point into Curtis Mayfield’s solo catalogue.
