Recorded in 1957, Bass On Top places Paul Chambers’ commanding double bass at the centre of a beautifully open, horn-free quartet. Chambers moves effortlessly between richly bowed passages and agile pizzicato lines, supported by Kenny Burrell’s warm guitar, Hank Jones’ elegant piano and Art Taylor’s supple drumming.
The spacious instrumentation gives every player room to breathe, turning standards such as “Yesterdays”, “You’d Be So Nice to Come Home To” and “Dear Old Stockholm” into intimate, deeply swinging performances. It is a superb showcase for one of modern jazz’s defining bassists.
This 2021 Blue Note Tone Poet edition was mastered by Kevin Gray from the original analogue master tapes under the supervision of Joe Harley, pressed on 180-gram vinyl at RTI and presented in a deluxe gatefold sleeve.
